Document Summary

Overview

The purpose of this document is to serve as the initial effort in the creation of the Texas A&M Black Former Student Committee (hereafter referred to as BFSC).

The purpose of BFSC will be to work in conjunction and cooperation with the Association of Former Students and to encourage involvement and participation in University issues/affairs among its members.  Also, BFSC will work closely with the Association of Former Students and Texas A&M University on matters of specific concern to Blacks at Texas A&M.

It is the intention for this committee to be the primary voice on issues and matters concerning black students, former and current.

Black Former Student Committee (BFSC)

PACBI

Today, the President’s Advisory Board on Black Issues (PACBI) exists as the only recognized body of Black Former Students.  However, there is not much structure or accountability in its present form.  It is recommended that this group be merge with or replaced by BFSC.  The Executive Board of the BFSC, along with any additional designees (other active members of BFSC) appointed by the President of the University, will fulfill the function of PACBI.

Initial Goals

The primary goal of the Charter/First Executive Board will be to solidify the structure of BFSC by making all designated committee appointments, developing an action agenda, and drafting a constitution and by-laws.  Also, it is intended for this committee to be an extension of the Association of Former Students.  Therefore, the Executive Board will be expected to follow the proper protocol to transition/integrate BFSC into the Association of Former Students.

Reunions

BFSC will also be responsible for planning a Black Former Student Reunion every other year.  The Reunion will also serve as a Convention of the general body of the Black Former Students.  Pending legislation and any other issues will be presented and voted on at the Reunion/Convention.  The 2001 Reunion in February will serve as the venue to elect the first Executive Board of BFSC.

Conclusion

As stated earlier in this document, this draft is the first step in laying the foundation to organize the Black Former Students of Texas A&M.  The job of the first elected Executive Board will be a tough one, for they will be tasked with bringing this vision to fruition.

An announcement of all committee positions will be made in the Black Aggie Newsletter, the Black Aggie Website, and at the Pre-Reunion Socials.  Black Former Students will be encouraged to announce their desire/candidacy immediately.

It is our hope that this is the first step in making life at Texas A&M University more enjoyable, involved, and enriched for black former and current students.
